Adaptive clinical practise

Course duration: 2 days

Course aim: On completing this training participants will have an improved knowledge of
humanitarian crisis systems and coordination mechanisms, and how the EMT role will differ from
usual NHS roles. As a result of this training participants will have the ability to deliver culturally
sensitive care to patients and be better prepared for the clinical reality of the field.

Course description: This training is aimed at clinicians working within a Type 1 facility who have limited humanitarian
experience and wish to improve their knowledge and understanding of healthcare within an
overseas humanitarian setting and the EMT initiative.

The training is designed to improve the participants overall knowledge of humanitarian crisis
systems and develop the participants understanding of the different challenges of deploying in
contexts outside the UK.

Some of the topics to be covered include:
• Working with national staff with a focus on capacity building activities
• Cultural awareness
• Clinical guidelines and specific clinical presentations not regularly seen in the UK e.g.
malaria, malnutrition etc.
• Humanitarian architecture and coordination mechanisms.

CPD points: 12 hours CPD points

Eligible specialities: GPs, emergency department doctors and nurses, ward nurses, midwives,
obstetricians and paramedics who completed the core training.
