Selection Training Exercise

Innovative live remote simulation of what it’s like to work with UK-Med in an emergency response.

  • For all aspiring UK-Med Register members without experience in humanitarian emergencies
  • One day online workshop
  • Developed and delivered in collaboration with Training in Aid.

About this course

This course is the first live group interaction between UK-Med and members wishing to join the Register who are new to humanitarian work. You’ll be working within, and assessed against, our Core Competencies Framework.

The aim of the Selection Training Exercise is to assess your approach to collaboration, problem solving, planning, adapting, adjusting your technical expertise to a new environment and how well you function in different roles. You’ll also gain a sense of what roles and challenges you may encounter, and what activities you may be delivering on a response.

What you will learn

By undertaking this exercise, individually and in groups:

  • You’ll show how well you can communicate and contribute to a team
  • You’ll demonstrate how you deal with rapidly changing situations, and how you handle stress
  • You’ll show how well you maintain ethical and professional behaviour
  • You’ll demonstrate your leadership skills where appropriate, including showing self-awareness, involving others in decision-making activities, and how well you exercise judgement in challenging situations
  • You’ll gain a realistic idea about what a response with UK-Med may involve.

How you will learn

You’ll be observed and assessed in a variety of scenarios and simulations that take place online over one day. There are also some pre-course learning activities so that you’ll be familiar with the Remote Exercise Management system platform before undertaking the simulation. You’ll be in a group of between ten and twenty participants.

Who this course is for

You’ll have little to no experience of humanitarian health emergencies. This course is for aspiring members of UK-Med’s Register. Our participants come from a wide range of clinical and professional backgrounds.
