UK Emergency Medical Team Myanmar training
Following on from successful programme visits to Myanmar in 2017 with Humanity and Inclusion, a small UK Emergency Medical Team team will be going both to Mandalay and Yangon in late April 2019.
Myanmar is particularly vulnerable to disasters and is regularly exposed to cyclones, floods and earthquakes. The country’s main cities of Mandalay, Sagaing, Naypyidaw, and Yangon are also located on the active Sagaing fault line which potentially would render all urban areas vulnerable to the repercussions of this natural disaster. In 2015, heavy monsoon rains and Cyclone Komen triggered the largest floods in the country’s history, affecting more than 20 million people, including 1.6 million who were displaced.
The purpose of this overseas capacity building exercise is to support the Mandalay and Yangon General Hospitals’ Mass Casualty Management Plans. The team is experienced in both pre-hospital planning and emergency department major incident medical management and support and thus will be well placed to provide guidance to test the systems developed by the emergency clinicians in Myanmar.
Clinical Leadership training
UK-Med and partners delivered the first Clinical Leadership training for fully trained register members who have been identified as potential clinical leaders as part of their role within the UK Emergency Medical Team. The objectives of the training were to expand understanding of clinical leadership within the context of an emergency deployment. Topics included effective participation in external coordination meetings, leadership styles, managing clinicians in the field, engaging with Ministries of Health and development of a range of referral pathways.
