NEPAL-TIBET FLASH FLOOD
On 26 August 2026, a major flash flood struck Nepal’s Rasuwa district.
A sudden surge of water entering the Bhote Koshi River from Tibet (China), resulting from a glacier collapse, caused widespread damage to communities including Timure, Rasuwagadhi and Syabrubesi.
At least 350 people have reportedly died, although the death toll is expected to rise as searches continue.
Around 1,400 people are reported missing: approximately 826 in Nepal and 558 in Tibet. These include hundreds of international tourists and pilgrims from more than 30 countries.
The total number of people affected or displaced has not yet been reliably established. Assessments are continuing, with some communities cut off by damaged roads, bridges, electricity and communications.
Search-and-rescue operations are ongoing, but remote mountainous terrain, damaged infrastructure, power outages and heavy sediment are making access extremely difficult.
Immediate health needs are likely to include search-and-rescue medicine, trauma and wound care, treatment for fractures and crush injuries, emergency surgery, management of hypothermia and support for people rescued from floodwater.
Wider needs may include safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene support; essential medicines and continuity of care for chronic conditions, pregnancy and childbirth; disease surveillance; and mental health and psychosocial support.
UK-Med is sending an assessment team to Nepal tonight (27/08/26) to understand the situation on the ground, identify gaps and determine where our emergency medical expertise could add the greatest value.
