We are excited to share that Freda Newlands, an emergency doctor and UK-Med member since 2016, has won Best Doctor at this year’s Who Cares Wins Awards!
The Who Cares Wins Awards celebrate heroes in the NHS who go above and beyond to support the most vulnerable patients at home or abroad.
Freda was presented with the prize by King Charles at Dumfries House, and the rest of the winners were announced at a star-studded event in London on Tuesday 22nd November.
“While I’ve been awarded the prize today it’s not just for me,” Freda said. “It’s for all the other clinicians who work in humanitarian settings, and without them I couldn’t do it.”
Freda was nominated for her work in Ukraine where she worked closely with internally displaced people (IDPs); visiting schools that were used to house people who had fled the frontline, speaking to families affected by the conflict, and helped set up health clinics which have cared for thousands of people over the past year.
Before her deployment to Ukraine, Freda has also provided urgent medical care in countries including Bangladesh, Gaza, Bhutan, Jordan, and Yangon.
Richard Dear, UK-Med’s Head of Logistics who nominated Freda for the award, said: “Freda does not make a song and dance about her humanitarian work. It largely goes unnoticed and unmentioned outside her immediate circle.
“Someone who takes these risks, and is this selfless, kind and giving, deserves every accolade and credit for her dedication to both the UK health service and humanitarian response.”
