Thanking our fantastic fundraisers

Over the past few months, the support we’ve received from Manchester and beyond has been amazing. It’s only thanks to the generosity of our supporters that we are able to respond to disasters and crises when called upon. Read more below about the fantastic fundraisers who are helping to ensure everyone has access to quality, effective care when they need it.

Cycling Extraordinaires

A huge thank you to John Drysdale who, along with his friend Charles Dudgeon, undertook the mammoth task of cycling from Amsterdam to Rome. The 1165 miles between the two cities didn’t disappoint in delivering some spectacular scenery and rustic towns, and the pair kept smiling despite climbing the equivalent of ten Ben Nevises – often without the luxury of paved roads.

John was moved to support UK-Med through a personal connection with one of our doctors, who is currently carrying out vital healthcare work in Ukraine. We would like to take this opportunity to celebrate John and Charles, and the amazing job they did rallying the community to raise over £10,000!

“I had countless inspiring conversations with people who were eager to do their bit to help – it was really uplifting to see how kind and thoughtful people can be. I also got a lot of support from the Dutch media, and briefly became a minor celebrity as people would say they recognised me from the TV or the newspapers! I raised £3,065 in the end, which I still can’t believe – I had no idea I would manage to raise so much. Thank you so, so much to everyone who contributed!”

Another remarkable cycling journey came from Joe Stafford, News and Media Relations Officer at our friends the University of Manchester, completed the Ronde van Nederland route in 14 days; cycling a distance of 1600km. While he travelled, he catalogued his journey as he travelled and spoke to many people across the country – raising over £3000!

Joe completed a marathon cycling challenge, raising over £3000 for UK-Med’s Ukraine Appeal.

Musical Fundraisers

Well done and thank you to Andrew Muir for organising the Phoenix Rock Concert. Andrew put on a brilliant night after two years of delays due to COVID-19, showcasing local young talent. Thank you, Andrew, and everyone who attended to support our Ukraine appeal and make the night a great success, raising £650.

A huge thank you to Merchant Voices, Glasgow’s community choir, who held a special event in the beautiful surroundings of the Fotheringay Centre, with proceeds going towards our work.

Bringing the Community Together

Students at Oxton St Saviour’s Primary School wowed us with their artistic talents, creating sunflowers, the national flower of Ukraine, and selling them to friends and family. We’d like to thank the staff, and the whole St Saviour’s community, for getting involved to support us and promoting the importance of community work to the children.

Walking the Distance

Nisha and the team at Cromwell Therapy walked the 2302km distance between London and Kyiv in only 30 days! Thank you to everyone who took part and helped raise over £400 to support our vital overseas work.

Congratulations to Linda Heritage who completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge for UK-Med! Linda raised an incredible £800 to support our emergency healthcare work in Ukraine.

Well done to Arthur McIntosh, who not only completed his degree, but ran 10k a day for 10 days and raised a fantastic £300 for UK-Med. Enjoy the summer and good luck for the future!

We’re so grateful for all of the support from our fantastic fundraisers above – thank you!

If you’re inspired to get involved, you can join us on 10 September 2022 as we come together to tackle the Yorkshire Three Peaks. Or, if you have an idea for a fundraiser of your own, please do get in touch with the team at fundraising@uk-med.org
