Thanking (even more of) our fantastic fundraisers

Our life-saving work is only possible with the backing of our donors and supporters. Together, we’re saving lives in emergencies.

We’d like to give a special shout-out to Philip Knowles for taking on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge this month, raising over £500 – an amazing achievement! – and to thank the Royal College of Students Edinburgh for their upcoming fundraiser film night on 6 October.

Read more below about some of our recent community fundraisers who are helping to ensure everyone has access to healthcare when they most urgently need it:

Wirral Schools’ Concert Band

The group is made up of 20 fantastic young musicians from around the Wirral, along with some who returned from university.

We want to say a huge thank you to the Wirral Schools’ Concert Band, who held their annual end of year celebration event on behalf of UK-Med. The group is made up of 20 fantastic young musicians from around the Wirral, along with some who returned from university. They play a mix of classical music, modern tunes, and show pieces which are a firm favourite of the players.

Esther Billing, flautist, and band member for several years, put UK-Med forward after hearing about the vital work we do around the world.

“This was my last concert with the group as I am going to university in September,” Esther says. “We always have a fun night at the celebration concert as the second half is fancy dress! I wanted to help UK-Med as I had heard all about the amazing work they do from my sister, who works for the organisation.

“We were all happy to come together to support such a worthy cause and hopefully help some vulnerable people around the world get the medical care they need in an emergency.”

The talented musicians and their families raised £183, which will go towards our Emergency Response Fund: ensuring we are prepared to respond within 24 hours to wherever we are needed next.

Celebrating a 50-year reunion!

We would like to extend our thanks to former students at the Middlesex Hospital Medical School, class of 1970. Stephen Chadwick, a former surgeon and UK-Med member, helped to organise a donation on behalf of his classmates as part of their first reunion after 50 years and said this about the event:

“In the autumn of 1970 just over 80 of us entered the 2nd MBBS Course of the Middlesex Hospital Medical School (MHMS 1970). Our careers took us in many directions and specialties. Though most practiced in the UK some settled and practiced in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, the USA, and Canada. Since qualification we had not met as a group.

“After more than 50 years, we held our first reunion: a two-day event starting in the hospital chapel, the only structure of our alma mater still standing. Funding for the reunion was by subscription from the 88 (53 ex-students – many returning from overseas – and partners) attendees of our reunion.”

Thank you to Stephen, and all the other attendees, for your support. We would not be able to continue our lifesaving work without people like you!

If you have an upcoming event, we are always looking for new sponsorships. Get in touch at fundraising@uk-med.org to chat about how you can get involved.

Tackling the Altrincham 10k

A huge thank you and congratulations to Alexandra Rucki, from Stockport, who took on the Altrincham 10k in September to raise vital funds for UK-Med.

Alex was driven to support us after working alongside us in the Mayor of Greater Manchester’s Office as part of our Ukraine appeal earlier in the year.

Speaking on her motivations to take on the challenge, Alex tells us: “I took up running during lockdown, having previously avoided it at all costs! This is the second time I have done the Altrincham 10k and I’m hoping to beat my time of 01:02 and do it in an hour, but I’ll be pleased to just get to the finish line to be honest!

“I have Ukrainian heritage, so it means a lot to me to be able to support UK-Med and do whatever I can to help work on the frontline of the conflict, as well as to other international disasters, crises, and health emergencies.”

Alex did a fantastic job fundraising and beat her target by raising £215. It is brilliant to see the generosity of the community, and it is thanks to people like Alex that we can get to some of the world’s most vulnerable people to carry out our lifesaving healthcare work.
